JEANERETTE - A convicted sex offender appearing on local most wanted lists for almost nine months was arrested Tuesday morning after a team of deputies with the Jeanerette Marshal's Office and the Jeanerette Police Department found the suspect hiding under a house on Trappey Street, Jeanerette City Marshal Fernest Martin said.
Arthur Jackson Jr., 26, of 524 Trappey St., Jeanerette, was picked up on charges of failure to notify change of address as a registered sex offender, armed robbery, felony issuance of worthless checks and failure to appear for a registered sex offender hearing within the 16th Judicial District, Martin said. Jackson also had warrants with the Jeanerette Police Department for misdemeanor charges, Martin said.
Jackson has been wanted for almost nine months in connection with the multiple offenses, Martin said, but reportedly was living in Houston until the beginning of this year. Police have searched several residences over the past few months in search of Jackson, Martin said.
Jeanerette law enforcement officials received a tip from a neighbor on Jackson's whereabouts and spotted him lying under the house when deputies arrived Tuesday morning, Martin said. He also is suspected of committing an armed robbery in Jeanerette in January.
Jackson was convicted in 2001 of contributing to the (sexual) delinquency of a minor and subsequently failed to register as a sex offender, according to court documents. When deputies tried to locate Jackson, his mother said he had moved to Houston to live with his father and claimed she did not know how to contact him, court documents state.
The suspected armed robber and sex offender is being held at the Jeanerette Marshal's Office for further questioning, Martin said. Jackson also is believed to be involved in several residential burglaries in Jeanerette reportedly recently.
Additional charges against Jackson are possible, Martin said.
