JD will review Alexandria's council districts

ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - The redistricting ordinance passed by the Alexandria City council will not be scrutinized by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Town Talk (http://townta.lk/sAapDE ) reports the review is required as District 1 fell outside the federally mandated 5 percent deviation. That means District 1 has 5 percent fewer residents than the average of the five council districts.

John Miller, executive director of the Rapides Area Planning Commission, who worked with the council to draw the new districts, said he doesn't think the Justice Department will have any issues with the redistricting.
