NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A new trial date has been set for the racketeering case against former state Rep. Renee Gill Pratt and longtime political operative Mose Jefferson.
An order issued Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle reschedules the start of the trial for Jan. 31, 2011.
The trial was scheduled to start Oct. 4, but Lemelle postponed it after prosecutors asked the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to review one of his rulings. The appeals court ruled prosecutors can question Jefferson, a brother of former Congressman William Jefferson, about his bribery convictions if he testifies during his trial for the racketeering case.
Jefferson and Gill Pratt are charged with conspiring to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars in government grant money earmarked for charitable and education programs.
