It is with heavy hearts that KATC brings you an update to a story we first brought you last year.
Last May, KATC viewers were introduced to James Myron Smith by his grandson, former KATC reporter Chris Welty. In a two-part series, Smith's battle against Alzheimer's and his family's struggle with the effects with the disease were documented.
Smith died Tuesday following a battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was 83-years-old.
Smith was a Georgia native who moved to New Orleans as a teenager. He remained a resident of New Orleans for the rest of his life. Smith served 42 years in the Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.
Smith is survived by his wife of more than 61 years, Marie, four daughters, seven grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
