NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has presented his 2014 budget proposal to the City Council, leaving out money for court-ordered jail reforms while including plans for 150 additional police officers.
Landrieu discussed the budget proposal at a news conference Tuesday morning before he and members of his staff presented it to the council.
Landrieu's administration and Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman have been in a legal and political dispute over who will have to foot the bill for millions of dollars in reforms at the parish prison. Landrieu said there is no money in the proposed budget for the reforms because the courts haven't decided on a dollar amount yet.
Landrieu also said other financial challenges facing the city include a $17.5 million judgment for firefighter pensions.
