NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Orleans Parish sheriff says a federal inmate who expressed a desire to kill himself before his arrest committed suicide at the parish jail.
Sheriff Marlin Gusman's office says 48-year-old William Goetzee, of LaPlace, apparently was able to asphyxiate himself Sunday night by swallowing toilet paper. Goetzee had been arrested Aug. 2 after he tried to snatch a gun from a security officer at the New Orleans federal courthouse.
The sheriff said that Goetzee had been on suicide watch and a guard who was supposed to be watching him 24 hours a day left his post. The guard has been suspended without pay.
Gusman said the death will be investigated by the sheriff's office and the U.S. Marshals Service.
