The Gillis Long Bridge between Alexandria and Pineville will be closed for about three months starting soon after Labor Day weekend for a major rehabilitation.
The work on the downtown bridge, also known as the Jackson Street Bridge, coupled with the ongoing construction of a replacement for the O.K. Allen Bridge, could cause congestion for area residents needing to cross the Red River.
The O.K. Allen Bridge remains open but traffic is slowed because of the construction.
The Jackson Street project - which is expected to cost $5.26 million - will include replacing the bridge deck, making the surface more bicycle-friendly. The bridge's pedestrian sidewalk also will be replaced along with the pedestrian ramp on the Alexandria side.
