Irish drop 3 doctors from probe into woman's death

DUBLIN (AP) - Ireland's government has removed three doctors from its investigation into the death of an ailing woman who was denied an abortion in an Irish hospital.

Prime Minister Enda Kenny has told lawmakers he hopes this move will allow her widower to support the probe.

Tuesday's U-turn came a day after Ireland formed a fact-finding panel into why Savita Halappanavar, an Indian dentist, died Oct. 28 while hospitalized in Galway.

The 31-year-old died of blood poisoning one week after being admitted in pain and facing an imminent miscarriage. Doctors refused her requests for a termination because the 17-week-old fetus still had a heartbeat.

Halappanavar's widower earlier said he wouldn't cooperate with the probe because three of the Galway hospital's senior doctors had been appointed as investigators.
