Acadia Parish School Leaders are dispelling a rumor that prayer is not allowed at football games. This after an uproar by students and parents from Iota High School.
It all started because of miscommunication, parents said they received notice from the school saying prayer wasn't allowed at the games anymore. The Acadia Parish Superintendent John Bourque says he was told that a priest gave an invocation last month at a game which is not allowed under federal law. However prayer can take place at public schools as long as it's student-led and student-initiated.
Bourque says wants students and parents to understand, its illegal for an adult to lead prayer at an athletic event whether we like it or not.
"Its possible to have prayer at football games, if a student volunteers then it can be done," said Bourque.
KATC's StevenAlbritton will be at tonights game in Iota getting reaction from students and parents. We'll have more on this story at 10p.m.
