MONROE, La. (AP) - A city board has voted to open an
investigation of Monroe Police Chief Ron Schleuter.
The probe ordered Tuesday by the Monroe Fire and Police Civil
Service Board stems from Schleuter secretly recording a meeting he
had with Mayor Jamie Mayo before Lt. Virgil Parker was demoted to
corporal. Parker had complained that the chief and another officer
used electronic surveillance to illegally spy on him.
Mayo put Schleuter on administrative leave with pay in February.
As police chief, Schleuter is protected by state civil service
laws, meaning he can appeal any firing by the mayor.
