Troopers make a $250,000 marijuana seizure after stopping a Mississippi man for a traffic violation on the interstate near Hammond.
The significant contraband discovery took place just after 9:00 am Sunday morning following a traffic stop on Interstate 12 near its junction with Interstate 55. Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L on routine patrol observed an eastbound driver of 2015 Mazda CX-5 committing a traffic violation. Upon speaking with the driver, Carlos Davis, 26, of Greenwood, Mississippi, troopers became suspicious of Davis' behavior. Davis refused consent to search his vehicle, but with the assistance of a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office K-9, the troopers' were alerted to the presence of approximately 300 lbs. of marijuana in the back seat and rear cargo area of the vehicle.
Davis consequently was placed under arrest without incident and met with Louisiana State Police Detectives to further the investigation. In coordination with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, a successful controlled delivery of the marijuana was conducted at a residence in Jackson, Mississippi, leading to additional arrests. Davis was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail and charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute. I
"Partnerships with our neighboring law enforcement counterparts and proactive efforts by Troopers was exactly the focus of our recent border trip highlighting the security issues affecting Louisiana on a daily basis," said Colonel Mike Edmonson. "The successful interception and seizure of the contraband undoubtedly prevented further criminal activity as it would have infiltrated communities both in Mississippi and Louisiana affecting our citizens."
