On Sunday, February 3, 2013, starting at approximately 7:00 a.m., Interstate Highway 10 westbound is scheduled to be closed near the Louisiana-Texas border throughout the day. The closure is necessary in order to recover a truck and its load from the side of the highway.
On February 2, 2013, at 12:24 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 West about 1 mile east of the Louisiana-Texas border in Calcasieu Parish. The crash occurred when a westbound truck with an oversize load driven by 53-year-old Donald Wayne Richardville of Catoosa, OK traveled off the right side of the road.
Richardville was transported by air ambulance to an area hospital with moderate injuries. Impairment is not suspected and the crash remains under investigation.
The truck, which is registered to Ace Heavy Haul LLC of Mooresville, NC, was carrying a heat exchanger weighing 115,000 pounds. The total weight of the truck and cargo approaches 200,000 pounds. For this reason, a large crane will have to be setup and used on the highway in order to recover the truck and its load.
Both westbound lanes of Interstate 10 will be closed at Exit 4 (LA 109). Traffic at this location will be diverted north on Louisiana Highway 109 to the community of Starks and then west on Louisiana Highway 12 to Texas. Motorists approaching this area should watch for stopped vehicles and can expect very long delays as the day progresses. The closure is expected to last at least 12 hours.
Officials with the Louisiana State Police and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will monitor the situation throughout the day and will work to reopen the highway as soon as it is safe to do so.
