ST. GABRIEL, La. (AP) - A man serving 65 years for armed robbery is accused of overpowering a state prison guard, putting on the guard's jacket and driving a prison ambulance to freedom.
State corrections spokeswoman Pam Laborde says 38-year-old Joshua Kelly was caught in Ascension Parish about 2:30 a.m. Friday, within hours of the escape from Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel.
She says he began his sentence in 1994 and was on a night cleaning crew as an infirmary orderly when he got out.
Laborde says the guard was not seriously hurt.
Secretary Jimmy Le Blanc says in a news release that the department is investigating the incident.
Laborde says it was the first escape from Hunt since 2005.
She says city or Iberville Parish authorities will decide any escape-related charges.
