Lafayette parents seeking innovative education alternative can learn how top-rated, tuition-free virtual public school can meet their individual needs
Louisiana Connections Academy information session
Tuesday, April 12, 6:30 - 8 p.m.
Holiday Inn Express Lafayette
3903 Ambassador Caffery Pkwy
Representatives from Connections Academy will be there to speak to families interested in learning about virtual public school in Louisiana.
Louisiana Connections Academy (LACA), the State's first statewide virtual charter school for grades K-12, will host a free information session for parents who want to learn about the free, full-time, public virtual charter school program. LACA can accept students from anywhere in the state, and students entering grades K-12 are eligible to apply. On April 1, LACA will begin accepting enrollments for students entering grades K-12 in the 2011-2012 school year.
At the information session, parents and students will have an opportunity to meet with LACA representatives, view the curriculum, learn about the online Learning Management System, and thoroughly explore the program. A complete schedule with dates and locations is also available at www.connectionsacademy.com/louisiana-school/home.aspx or by calling (800) 382-6010.
Authorized by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, LACA will serve 500 K-12 students from across the state, delivering an exceptional public school education from the comfort of home. The program will offer Louisiana-certified teachers, a standards-aligned curriculum, unique technology tools, an extensive selection of electives and clubs, and community experiences to create an individualized alternative to the bricks-and-mortar classroom.
The non-traditional learning environment can be a great fit for all types of students including those who are significantly ahead or behind in the classroom, those who need a flexible schedule or learn at a different pace from their peers, and those who need more individualized attention or live in isolated rural settings. Homebound and previously home-schooled students can also thrive in Connections Academy's program.
All LACA students also participate in the nationally certified Connections Academy program that includes a print-rich curriculum that combines high quality textbooks from leading publishers with cutting-edge, yet easy-to-use, technology resources and hands-on materials.
Learning from home, students work closely with their parents, or other "Learning Coaches" and a licensed Louisiana teacher using detailed daily lesson plans that can be personalized to meet individual student needs. Interaction between teachers and students is frequent.
Accountability is central the school's mission, and students must meet the same levels of accountability and complete the same state standardized tests as traditional public schools. LACA's administrative office and teaching center is in Baton Rouge, but the school serves families from across the state.
