In NYC, a Police Force Just for Ground Zero

NEW YORK (AP) - Twelve blocks north of ground zero, a stable
that once held police horses has become a staging area for a World
Trade Center site security force.
The New York Police Department relocated the horses to house
more than 200 police officers who are in charge of patrolling the
site. Eventually, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says 670 police
officers will be in charge of securing ground zero. That's a force
bigger than many police departments around the country.
Hundreds of closed-circuit cameras and airport-style screening
will also greet the hundreds of thousands of visitors expected at
the memorial when it opens next month.
Police have long viewed the site as a terror threat, since the
attacks in 2001 and 1993. Prosecutors uncovered another terror plot
in 2006 to flood rail tunnels leading to the site.
