Louisiana State Senator, Troy Hebert, from St. Martin Parish, wants to file a friend of the court brief. That's paperwork intended to send a message to Washington D.C. saying Louisiana supports Arizona's immigration laws.
"Since the hurricanes, we've had a lot of illegals coming into the state," Herbert tells KATC TV 3.
As it stands, the Arizona law allows law enforcement to stop a person on the street, ask for proof of citizenship and if the person in question can't produce proper documentation, that person could be detained.
The state senator isn't calling for Louisiana laws to change anytime soon, but the very discussion of the immigration issue has local Mexican Americans on edge.
Jose Valero tells KATC TV 3, Mexican immigrants come to America to work hard and make a living, he does not support changing immigration laws or Louisiana backing the Arizona.
