Biloxi, Mississippi--What a difference a week makes. Seven days after blowing a late lead and losing here, the Louisiana IceGators bounced back to shut out the Mississippi Surge in the Mississippi Coast Coliseum by the final score of 3-0. IceGator goalie Riley Gill was stellar, stopping all 27 shots he faced.
The victory gives the IceGators (22-10-4) a share of first place in the SPHL standings. Pensacola, who defeated the Mississippi RiverKings in overtime Tuesday night, also have 48 points.
The IceGators return to the Cajundome Thursday night to complete their home-and-home series against the Surge (18-15-4). Game time is 7:05 P. M.
"That's a solid, solid road win," said IceGator coach Kevin Kaminski. "We showed lots of character and played a resilient 60 minutes."
"Everybody played a big part in the win," he added. "The guys executed the game plan and played simple, smart, and hard hockey. The guys didn't give up much defensively, and when they did, Gill was a wall in the goal."
The IceGators opened the scoring late in the first period. Shawn McNeil scored off an assist from Troy Ofukany at the 14:20 mark. Cody Zubko increased the IceGators' lead to 2-0 off a Jordan Foreman assist at 13:50 of the second period. Matt Miller capped off the scoring early in the third period after taking a feed from Matt Robertson.
Kaminski says his team cannot allow their return to first place distract them from their upcoming rematch. "We had no passengers tonight, and everybody played well," he said. "But now we have to focus and get ready to do our jobs again in a huge home game on Thursday."
