Southaven, Miss.--The Louisiana IceGators ended their first road trip of the year in dominating fashion Saturday night.
Jeff Grant and Jason Cohen scored to lead the IceGators to a 2-0 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings. Goalie Keifer Smiley stopped all 22 RiverKing shots to earn his first shutout of the season.
The IceGators open their home slate Friday night at 7:05 P. M. when they host the Mississippi Surge in the Cajundome.
"It was a successful road trip," said IceGator head coach Kevin Kaminski. "It was a great team effort. The boys paid the price to get the win.
"We were sloppy and sluggish in the first period, but we really improved on our effort and in the execution of our systems. We played stingy defense, and Smiley stepped up and made key saves on a couple of breakaways."
Despite the early mistakes, the IceGators controlled the entire contest.
Jeff Grant scored his first goal as an IceGator with 2:18 remaining in the first period off assists from Jake Trask and Adam Stuart. Jason Cohen scored his third goal of the season off a Jeremy Boyer feed midway through the second period.
Although the IceGators offense didn't produce a goal in the third period, Kaminski was impressed by what he saw from his team in that frame.
"The third period was the best of the early season by far," Kaminski said. "Now it's time to get some rest for next weekend and have a little fun at our Halloween tournament."
The Louisiana IceGator 3-on-3 Halloween Costume Tournament will take place Thursday at 6:30 P. M. at LA Ice in Carencro. The public is invited to attend.
