Over the summer there has been much speculation by IceGator fans if the 35 year old veteran Shawn McNeil would return for another season or hang his skates up. Today, Louisiana IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski had the answer to their questions when he announced that McNeil has re-signed for the 2013-2014 season.
"This is great news for the organization," said Coach Kaminski. "Any time you sign your captain back it makes life easier. Not only does he provide scoring, but a wealth of experience with hockey smarts and leadership. Shawn does everything well. He is great on the power play and penalty kill. He is consistent, takes the hit to make the play, blocks shots, finishes checks and leads with great work ethic."
This will be Shawn's eighth season as an IceGator and 15th season of professional hockey. McNeil first played for the IceGators from 1999-2003. In the fall of 2003 he left North America to begin playing hockey in Europe. For the next seven seasons he would play in Germany before returning in 2010 to rejoin the IceGators.
Last season McNeil played in 56 games for the Gators posting 46 points (19 goals and 27 assists) on the regular season. During the IceGators run to the semi-finals in the post season he lead the team in scoring with 8 points in just 6 games.
Fans can welcome back McNeil and the rest of the 2013-2014 IceGators when the puck drops for the Home Opener on November 1 at the Cajundome. Season tickets are available now and individual tickets will go on sale the 21st of October at the IceGators office and the Cajundome Box Office. For more information call 704-4423.
