Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal has issued a curfew beginning now until 6:00 a.m.
According to sheriff's deputies, they're mainly concerned about bridges and overpasses in the parish.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, there are 13,175 bridges in Louisiana. In Acadiana there are 2,051, and in Iberia parish there are 148. 90 of the bridges in the parish are maintained by the state.
Beginning Tuesday night, the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) poured half a ton of salt on the Lewis Street Bridge in Iberia Parish.
According to Captain Ryan Turner, the city had to shut the bridge down during last week's weather. "That's our main thoroughfare. It's our main issue and our biggest concern right now. We're just advising motorist to stay off the roadway if at all possible," Turner said.
During extreme cold conditions DOTD maps out high traffic routes. To keep the more than 151,000 square meters of bridges in the parish open, workers use a mixture of deicing liquid and salt to keep ice from forming.
"Just like every other parish that has over passes, we're having issues with ours," Turner said.
