$1,000,000 Delcambre Property Elevation Project Approved

Iberia Parish President Ernest Freyou has announced that the Louisiana State Office of Community Development Disaster Recovery Unit has approved the Iberia Parish Government application for Gustav/Ike Disaster Recovery funding in the amount of $1,000,000 for the Delcambre Property Elevation for Economic Development Project. The Council adopted a resolution on May 26, 2010 approving the project application due to the current lack of available goods and services in the Town of Delcambre which affects the welfare of its residents.

The objective of the project is to stimulate economic activity in the Town of Delcambre while also assisting in providing consumer goods and a grocery store to the residents of Delcambre. Since the first storm surge that inundated Delcambre in September 2005, the only grocery store serving this community closed and has not reopened. This lack of a grocery store to allow the citizens of Delcambre to purchase the basic essentials has caused a major void over the past five plus years. There is a consensus of the citizens of Delcambre regarding the need for a grocery store to be located in the Town so that they do not have to travel to New Iberia, Erath or Abbeville for their basic food products.

President Freyou states that he has met on several occasions with the Mayor of Delcambre, Twin Parish Port Commission members and the Parish Economic Development Director to develop a plan to lure a grocery store in Delcambre. This project would be multifaceted and will include the acquisition, elevation and improvements of adjacent infrastructure. Several potential vacant sites in Delcambre fronting or in the immediate vicinity of LA Highway 14 have been identified.

It is the intention of the Parish to acquire the necessary property; elevate at least the portion of the property above the base flood elevation which the building will be situated on and upgrade, if necessary the Town's infrastructure (water, sewer and/or streets) that serves the property.

It is anticipated that the improvements made to the site will be conducive to a private firm to develop a business venture on the improved site. It is the intention of the Parish to solicit Request for Proposals to private firms to identify a list of potential uses for the property and to develop (construct and operate) the commercial establishment on the property.

President Freyou states "He will continue to work very closely with Mayor Carol Broussard and the Town of Delcambre officials, as well as Mike Tarantino, CEO of Iberia Economic Development Authority and the Twin Parish Port Commission members and will try to expedite this project as much as possible for the Citizens of the Town."
