Iberia Parish President Errol "Romo" Romero is asking the Iberia Parish District Attorney's Office to reimburse Iberia Parish Government for personal health insurance. Parish government pays health insurance benefits to District Attorney Phil Haney and his assistant district attorneys, but in a hand delivered letter to Haney, Romero said a parish council resolution nor an intergovernmental agreement exists authorizing payments.
"Not only are these personal health insurance benefits unearned by most in your office, but these payments are contrary to the Charter and are deemed illegal," Romero said. According to Romero, payments are illegal according to the Louisiana Constitution. The parish president has ordered personal health insurance payments to the district attorney's office to stop immediately.
Romero has asked Haney to reimburse the parish $302, 441.86 which was paid from January 1, 2008 through January 1, 2012, and he wants it paid within 15 days. "My goad is the same as yours," Romero said in the letter. "To make sure that we consider the best interest of Iberia Parish Government and to be mindful that the funds expended are the public's money. I hope that you share this belief."
