Right now, the Iberia Parish Council is holding a special meeting to vote on a Chief Administrative Officer. This is the second time the Parish President is nominating a replacement for the former CAO who resigned in June. The council didn't approve the last nomination.
Iberia Parish President Romo Romero called a special meeting to vote on his candidate for CAO. Romero's choice is Ricky Verret.
"He just brings the experience. He's done this almost all his life, his experience in government, especially with parish government," said Romero.
Iberia Parish Government has not had a CAO since June. Even though he's the only candidate, Verret says he is the best candidate for the job.
"My objective in this is to do some good for all of them," said Verret. "I want to help the council, the president and the people in terms of helping bridge their leaders together and move Iberia Parish in a forward direction for the positive benefit of the public."
Verret is no stranger to government. He has experience working at the federal, state and local levels, to include working as an international trade specialist for Lafayette Consolidated Government.
"I only have one credit left to be able to graduate with my law degree, which gives me the ability to read and understand what my legal obligations are to the public," said Verret. "And that's how I want to come into this job, is to be the sort of trustee for the public interest."
This person is essentially the financial advisor to Romero. The last person he nominated for the job was rejected in June. Verret hopes the council will let him help clear the air in regards to Romero's administration so progress can be made in Iberia Parish.
"Other than working with the finances and making sure their straight, the alternate most important thing I have to concentrate on is building a trusting relationship between the council and the administration," said Verret. "And that's where I think I can provide the biggest service to Iberia Parish."
The special council meeting started at 6. They will be voting whether, or not, to hire Verret.
