The Iberia Parish Coroner of 18 years, Dr. James Falterman Sr. died suddenly Tuesday.

Lynn Guiberteau worked in Dr. Falterman's office, she said, she's known him" since I was 18. I've known no other doctor. He took care of me and delivered my children."

Guiberteau says, she has worked with Dr. Falterman since he first opened his practice in the 1960's.

She said, "he was so giving. He would look at a patient and if it looked like they were need of something, he would say I don't want you to charge them anything."

Falterman practiced medicine for 47 years... for many residents of Jeanerette, he was the only doctor they had ever gone to.

Guiberteau said, "he always wanted to know who would take care of his patients. If only he could know now how many people are coming in and wanting to know who will take care of them."

Falterman also served as the Iberia Parish Coroner....a title which has been passed along to a fellow colleague and friend, Dr. Carl Ditch.

Dr. Ditch said, "when we discussed it we thought it'd be something that would happen many years from now- when he retired. So with his passing on Tuesday it was certainly not something that we expected."

Dr.ditch says he hopes to carry forward the work that Falterman has left behind.

"He has put in place an excellent coroners office, probably one of the best in the state and we are going to try and carry on the duties like he has," Ditch said.
