One person is dead and another is in the hospital after an early morning domestic situation in Iberia parish. Officials tell us a teenager was taken hostage by her boyfriend, Ashton Lopez, at 5:30 Monday morning. Monday night, Rolanda Brown was recovering from a gunshot wound. It's an event that woke many neighbors and has stirred their emotions.
Audry Embroves is one of many on Mississippi Street who woke up to total chaos, no electricity, and lots of questions. "I heard a boom when I woke up and I saw a flame. I could hear a lady screaming in the car." She said.
Officials tell us the car crash began as a domestic disturbance between 20 year old Ashton Lopez and his 19 year old girlfriend Rolanda Brown. "The suspect went to pick up his girlfriend on Shot Street. He forced her into the car at gun point and at some point shot her in the abdomen," said Iberia Parish Lieutenant Ryan Turner.
Turner said Lopez, drove Brown down Mississippi Street then crashed into an electrical pole at the intersection of Mississippi and Hopkins Street. The impact shut off all power to the area. Witnesses said after the car crash Lopez ran to the next street and started yelling for help. He ended up the ground in between two trailers, where he shot and killed himself. His body was found directly in found of Allen Wells house. "The young man was hollering for help, saying help, help, help, my girlfriend is about to die," said Wells.
Authorities are not saying what sparked the argument or why Lopez took his own life.
The electricity in that area was fixed by Monday afternoon. Also, as of that time Rolanda Brown was in stable condition in an Iberia Parish hospital.
