A deputy is recovering after a St. Martinville man sped off during a traffic stop.
On January 15, 2013 at 9:30 p.m. Deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office Criminal Patrol Unit attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a vehicle on HWY 90 east bound near the HWY 14 exit. As the deputy making the traffic stop approached the suspect's vehicle it sped off fleeing the scene and injuring the deputy who was standing near the suspect's vehicle at the time of the stop. The deputy was treated for his injuries at a local hospital and later released.
The suspect, Travis Lee, 39, of St. Martinville was finally stopped on Avery Island Road after a brief pursuit by deputies. Deputies were able to confiscate over $6,000.00 in cash, methamphetamines, powder cocaine, marijuana and controlled prescription medication. During the pursuit deputies also observed Lee throw items from his vehicle, which deputies later determined were illegal narcotics.
Lee was charged with possession with intent to distribute schedule II narcotics, possession with intent to distribute schedule I narcotics, second subsequent offender, proceeds derived from drug transactions, aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce, aggravated flight from an officer, resisting an officer, battery of a police officer, misuse of a temporary license plate and taking contraband into a penal institution. Lee was then booked into the Iberia Parish Jail.
