LAFAYETTE, La. - The second-ranked Louisiana baseball team will look to bounce from a tough 5-4 loss at UT Arlington on Sunday when the Cajuns host McNeese State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference midweek clash at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
The game is the first of four to be played at "the Tigue" this week with the Ragin' Cajuns hosting Texas State in a three-game series this weekend starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
Fans can watch the game live on myKLAF-TV or on ESPN3.com. Dan McDonald will make the call with Kevin Cantrelle providing color. The game will also be broadcast on ESPN 1420-AM with Jay Walker providing play-by-play.
Despite losing in the series finale, Louisiana (36-5, 16-2 Sun Belt) took two of three from the Mavericks this past weekend in Arlington, Texas. The Cajuns have won 11 straight weekend series and are 9-1 in midweek games and 12-1 against in-state opponents.
The Ragin' Cajuns remained at No. 2 in both the USA Today Coaches poll and the Perfect Game rankings. The squad dropped two spots to third in the Collegiate Baseball rankings and from second to third in both the Baseball America and NCBWA rankings.
Senior Matt Hicks will make his third start of the season for Louisiana against McNeese State. Hicks is 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA and has 20 strikeouts in 24 innings.
Offensively, the Cajuns rank second in the nation with a .327 average and are first in the country in triples (23), home runs (49) and slugging percentage (.530).
Junior Jace Conrad leads the team with a .393 average, while Caleb Adams has a team-best nine home runs to go with a .503 on base percentage.
The Cajuns hold an 89-62 series edge against the Cowboys (20-18, 10-8 Southland) after picking up a 14-8 victory in Lake Charles, La., earlier this month. Louisiana holds a five-game win streak in the series and has won 14 of the last 16 meetings.
McNeese State comes into the contest on a five-game skid and has lost seven of its last eight contests. The Cowboys were swept by Central Arkansas in a three-game road series over the weekend.
Jackson Gooch leads the squad offensively hitting .342 with seven doubles, a triple, a home run and 30 RBI. Gooch is also 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts.
Right-hander Michael Desabrais (0-1, 4.99 ERA) will make his second start of the season against the Cajuns. Desabrais gave up six runs (four earned) in the previous meeting and was knocked from the game in the third inning.
