Hurricane season starts Tuesday-- and law enforcement and parish leaders are getting ready.
They want everyone to get a game plan now.
Acadiana's leaders in emergency preparedness finalized plans this week at meetings such as Thursday's summit in St. Martinville.
They say pre-planning is especially important in areas south of I10.
Some of their survival plan in the disaster guide includes:
-deciding where to go if you leave home
-learning evacuation routes
-making a survival kit
-preparing special needs relatives and animals
-protecting your home
-planning your finances
During evacuation law enforcement will put up barriers, moving all the traffic out of dangerous areas-but they recommend leaving before that has to happen.
"There is going to be a lot of traffic. There are going to be hold-ups when you're traveling because we're trying to move tens of thousands of people through very condensed areas," says Trooper Stephen Hammons of the Louisiana State Police.
To get a disaster evacuation guide, contact the Louisiana state police at 1-800-469-4828, the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS, or you can get it at most local grocery stores.
