VINTON, La. (AP) - Rescue crews have found a 74-year-old hunter who got lost in the Sabine Island Wildlife Management Area in west-central Calcasieu Parish.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says Virgil Conway of Vinton was reported missing about 6:45 p.m. Monday, when he didn't come home on time. He was found about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday in the south end of the 8,700-acre area west of a line from Starks to Vinton.
Spokesman Adam Einck says searchers included wildlife agents, Calcasieu Parish sheriff's deputies, firefighters and friends who knew where Conway hunted. They found his boat at 7:30 p.m. Monday, and found Conway about a mile away.
Einck says Conway had found a place to wait for help, and had fired shotgun shells into the air after dark to get rescuers' attention.
