Hundreds of crab traps removed from waters

COCODRIE, La. (AP) - Volunteers have removed more than 740 abandoned crab traps from Terrebonne Parish waters as a part of the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries' Derelict Crab Trap Removal project.

Wildlife and Fisheries officials partnered with the LSU AgCenter on the removal effort, staging a volunteer cleanup day at the LUMCON marine research facility in Cocodrie in late March.

According to The Daily Comet volunteers combed the marshes and bayous surrounding Cocodrie to locate and haul in abandoned traps.

The final total of crab traps retrieved in Terrebonne was 747, and more than 2,700 total traps were removed from waters in Terrebonne, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes.
