The Lafayette Housing Authority is now under federal oversight. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has taken over LHA.
City-Parish Pres. Joey Durel says, "HUD did the right thing under the circumstnaces." Durel dismissed the board in August after a state audit report showed possible mismanagement and misuse of funds. Since August, three commissioners filed a lawsuit, and won their seats back. Durel dismissed them again. That spurred another legal challenge from the commissioners which is pending in district court.
The city-parish president has the authority to appoint and remove commissioners, but other than that Durel says, "We have nothing to do with the housing authority." He goes on to say Lafayette government has spent tax dollars "defending a simple removal of volunteer board members which is ludicrous."
He says it's ashame the big battle has been over three volunteer board members which has done nothing to help the housing authority.
KATC's Shawn Kline will have more details about how federal oversight will affect the Lafayette Housing Authority and the community.
