The Housing Authority of the City of Lafayette is changing the way it accepts applications for the Section 8 Housing waiting list. In a press release, HACL says will use a lottery system to determine who gets on the list. HACL says applicants will now submit their forms via the internet, e-mail, U. S. Mail, or hand delivery during a two-week application period. Once this period closes, applicants will be selected at random for placement on the list. HACL says this will make the application process easier and ensure equal opportunity for all applicants.
This change comes after nearly 1000 people crowded into the parking lot of the Domingue Center in Lafayette to apply for the Section 8 waiting list. Some of those applicants began lining up in front of the building Monday evening. City-Parish Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux criticized the process as disorganized and "almost to the point of (being) inhumane."
