NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Federal officials are extending disaster housing aid for victims of hurricane Ike and Gustav by five months.
The extension, announced Friday, will help about 1,743 families in Louisiana. The victims have been receiving disaster aid since the hurricanes hit in the fall of 2008. The rental assistance program was scheduled to end on March 31.
Federal officials say hurricane victims will have until Sept. 30 to find permanent housing.
Some families at the end of the program who meet the eligibility requirements may be able to get special vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help them with housing. With such a voucher, a family pays no more than 30 percent of their income for rent.
