St. Landry Parish will hold its second annual hazardous household waste disposal day Saturday in both Eunice and Opelousas.
Hazardous waste such as motor oil, household cleaners and chemicals, pesticides and more will be accepted from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Opelousas Recycling Center at 2717 W. Landry St. In Eunice, the waste will be accepted at the Eunice Recycling Center at 450 N. C.C. Duson St. from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
Martin said the goal is to make sure these chemicals and items, many of which are poisonous, don't wind up the parish landfill where they can cause problems.
The disposal effort is only intended for residents of St. Landry Parish residents, so people will need to show some type of identification such as a driver's license or a utility bill with a local address.
The collection effort is also only designed for household waste, so large quantities from businesses, farms or commercial operations will not be accepted.
the disposal day, funded through a variety of grants and other sources, should cost about $12,000. For more information, call 826-5211.
