House Panel Weighing Boost in State Worker Costs

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Lawmakers are considering a Jindal administration proposal to raise retirement costs for state workers, which would eat into paychecks that have been frozen at the governor's request for several years.
The House Retirement Committee is scheduled to discuss the proposal Thursday.
The bill would cost state employees an estimated $25 million more annually for their retirement packages.
Gov. Bobby Jindal has proposed using the money to plug gaps in the state budget, and supporters say it's not too much to ask for state workers to contribute more to what they consider a generous retirement benefit.
Critics say state employees shouldn't be forced to take pay cuts to solve state budget problems.
