PLAIN DEALING, La. (AP) - A deputy at Bossier Parish's Maximum Security Facility spotted a fire and rushed to a burning house Monday, but was unable to save the 74-year-old woman inside, Sheriff Larry Deen said.
The woman was identified as Mary Jane Aiken Moore.
Deen said that as the deputy drove to the fire in Plain Dealing, two package delivery drivers told him a woman was in the burning house.
He said it was fully ablaze when the deputy arrived. He ran to a window and shouted, heard someone or something fall, then kicked in a side door and shouted "Ma'am! Ma'am!" to try to locate the woman. Nobody answered and the flames and smoke became too intense for him to get in.
Fire companies from three districts put out the fire and found Moore's body.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
