Houma Police confirm that the pit bull that killed four-year-old Mia Derouen is being tested for rabies and that those results will not be known for about a week.
A rabies test sample was "sent off this morning," said Chief Todd Duplantis.
"The dog is being tested for rabies only," said Duplantis.
The girl's mother, Megan Touchet, also was attacked by the two-year-old dog and is now recuperating at home.
Niko, the dog that killed the child is not the family's only pet. The family also has another pit bull named Khloe, who was held in an animal shelter for further observation. Pictures of Niko had been posted on a family member's Facebook page, but reportedly since have been taken down (dog pictured above).
Houma Police said that the investigation continues.
