Houma officer, suspect hurt in gunfire exchange

HOUMA, La. (AP) A police chase in Houma ended with an exchange of gunfire that left a suspect hospitalized. A police officer escaped serious injury when a bullet hit his protective vest, according to chief Todd Duplantis.

Police say it happened early Wednesday when patrolling officers noticed a car speeding away from them. After a car chase, the suspect got out of his car and ran. Officer Kelly Champagne caught up with him and used a Taser to shock him, according to a story in The Courier newspaper.

The suspect then allegedly shot at Champagne, grazing the officer's arm and striking his protective vest. Champagne fired back, hitting the suspect, who ran and was later caught by Terrebonne Parish sheriff's deputies and state police.
