Homicide investigation launched into hit-and-run death of Kaplan native

Fort Walton Police said they have launched a traffic homicide investigation into the hit-and-run collision of a pickup truck with a Kaplan native as he walked across a street in Fort Walton Beach last Wednesday night.

The pedestrian, Demetris Williams, 26, was a 2005 graduate of Kaplan High School. Williams was attempting to cross the intersection of Carson Dr. And Hollywood Blvd. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Our affiliate, WEAR-TV3, in Fort Walton reports that Fort Walton Police issued an alert to "be on the lookout" for a white Ford F-150 driven by Joshua Wilson. Wilson's pickup struck Williams at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 5, and Williams was knocked "into the path of a car driven by Savannah Czarnecki, which ran him over." Wilson's pickup was seen heading west of Hollywood Blvd.shortly after the collision, but Wilson later phoned the police from home, police said.

A Fort Walton Beach newspaper reported that firefighters were called to the scene to lift Czarnecki's gold Toyota so that Williams's body could be removed from underneath the vehicle.

"Williams' tan Converse-style sneakers were splayed in the middle of Hollywood Boulevard along with shards of glass," the report reads. Local reports noted that paramedics attempted to treat Williams, but were unsuccessful.
