Iberia Parish leaders tell KATC, homelessness is a growing problem and for homeless couples and women, finding shelter is especially difficult. In New Iberia there is just one shelter for homeless families, the problem is, it is at capacity.
The main shelter is only for homeless men, and the only shelter for women is only for domestic abuse victims.
Councilman John Berard presented his plan last night at the parish council meeting.
"I'm going to ask the council to help us to work with the present homeless shelter to have females enter there or some other premises", said Berard.
