NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu says about 100 historic homes will be moved to make way for a new Veterans Affairs hospital in the city.
Landrieu plans to highlight the move on Friday. Under initial hospital plans, the homes were to be demolished, but now they are going to be moved using $3.2 million in federal disaster recovery aid and with the help of nonprofit groups.
Building the VA hospital in conjunction with a new Charity Hospital has been bitterly opposed by residents, activists and preservationists who say the new hospitals will destroy historic neighborhoods. Plans for the hospitals are moving forward.
