NEW ORLEANS (AP) - State Rep. Walker Hines is pulling out of the secretary of state race and won't seek any public office in the fall.
In a statement Thursday, Hines said he decided not to run a campaign this fall and, instead, will focus on his personal life and health.
Hines' announcement comes just days after House Speaker Jim Tucker said he would challenge the current officeholder, Tom Schedler of Mandeville. Hines says he has not decided yet whether to endorse anyone in the Oct. 22 primary.
Hines was elected to the Legislature in 2007 as a Democrat. He switched to the Republican Party last November.
