LAFAYETTE, La. - John Hendrick, Certified Physician Assistant with Louisiana Heart, Lung & Vascular at the Regional Medical Center of Acadiana, recently received a Certificate of Added Qualification in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Physician assistants are licensed and certified members of a healthcare team who practice under the direction of a physician. The additional certification Hendrick recently received further distinguishes his qualification and ability to assist the Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgeons at Louisiana Heart, Lung & Vascular.
"The national certification indicates I exhibit a proficiency in Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery above what is required for certification as a P.A.," Hendrick said. "In essence, I am qualified to do procedures in a hospital other certified physician assistants are not granted permission to perform, like chest tube placements, hemodialysis catheter placements and other bedside procedures."
Physician assistants must demonstrate advanced knowledge and experience in both Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery "above and beyond" what is expected of entry level and other physician assistants working in a general practice, according to the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants qualifications.
The organization's website, nccpa.net, further specifies, "PAs seeking eligibility for the Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgery Specialty Examination must meet requirements of specialty-specific CME (Continuing Medical Education), experience in the field and specific knowledge and/or experience in conducting procedures and being involved in patient cases that are deemed core to the specialty area of practice."
