NEWTON, Texas (AP) - The sheriff of Newton County says a man on the ground has been hurt after a a helicopter used for spraying herbicide crashed during takeoff.
Sheriff Joe Walker said that the accident happened
Wednesday morning when a refueling hose apparently was still
attached to the helicopter as it tried to lift off north of Newton, about 140 miles northeast of Houston.
Walker says the helicopter blade struck the victim, who was transported to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital in Jasper. His name and condition were not immediately released.
Walker had no details on the fate of the pilot.
Walker says the helicopter is used to spray herbicide on forest properties and a refueling truck apparently was used.
Newton is about 10 miles west of the Texas-Louisiana border.
