In Opelousas this morning, officials are heightening security after a riot at Opelousas High School on Monday.
Starting today, all students will enter in one entrance when school begins. One Opelousas teacher says all students will be checked for a weapons, possibly using a metal detector wand. Resource officers will be hired at the school and Opelousas PD will walk through the school at busy times: lunch and class changes. Administrators are allowing students along with their parents involved in the fight to give their side of the story before academic disciplinary action is taken.
"We have identified three gangs in the city of Opelousas that we've focused much of our attention on over the last few weeks. Some of the engagements they've had in the community spilled over into Opelousas High," said Captain Martin Morgan.
Opelousas PD will be charging at least 15 students with disturbing the peace or simple battery, other charges possible pending the investigation. 18 students were arrested to begin with.
