KENNETT, Mo. (AP) Heather Ellis has taken the witness stand in her trial about a case with strong racial overtones.
The 24-year-old school teacher from Louisiana is accused of cutting in line at the Kennett Walmart in January 2007, then becoming belligerent and refusing to leave after store managers asked her to go.
Ellis testified Friday that she got into an argument with another woman in the checkout line, but denied causing the ruckus.
She says the situation escalated when an assistant manager began yelling at her. By the time she checked out, four police officers had arrived to escort her and her 15-year-old cousin from the store.
In earlier testimony, prosecutors claimed Ellis became verbally abusive inside the store and later attacked police. But she gave a different account.
