CUPS received a generous grant from Ascension Episcopal, which allowed us to purchase about 30 electric space heaters for families in Acadiana - just in time for this cold spell. We picked them up yesterday and began distributing them fast and furiously because the cold weather is here! But, we are now out. :-(
All the heaters went to families/individuals that had NO other heat source in the home. Many of these folks were using their kitchen stove for heat (a very dangerous way to do things!).
And the need is still tremendous. There will be many individuals/families in our community this week and into this weekend that will be facing these very cold temperatures with no heat. And many other large families that will be crowded around just one space heater....
So, I'm sending out the "all call". If you have a space heater that you could give away, or if you have money you would like to donate toward the purchase of one (or more!), or if you'd be willing to go purchase some or deliver some to folks who need them, PLEASE let me know.
You can reach me by cell phone (278-6621) or email (email@example.com).
Through a collaborative effort of three area non-profits, we hope to be able to process your donations and the requests for heaters quickly and effectively.
The Extra Mile will serve as a donation drop-off location. They are located at 525 S. Buchanan St. (downtown Lafayette - across from Iberia Bank Towers (open 9am-4pm). You can drop donations off there.
232-HELP/LA 211 is the place to call if you (or someone you know) needs a heater. 232-HELP/LA 211 will screen those in need and process the requests.
CUPS will facilitate the distribution of the heaters to those in need.
Please forward this email to anyone you know who might be able/willing to help.
Thanks so much for your continued support and your prayers.
