Health Insurance Ban For Abortions Scaled Back

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A proposed ban on health insurance
coverage for all elective abortions has been scaled back by a
Senate committee to affect only the state insurance purchasing
pools set up by the federal health overhaul legislation.
Lawmakers on the Senate Health and Welfare Committee say they
were limiting the bill to the intentions first described by Gov.
Bobby Jindal and the House member who proposed it. They then
approved the measure in a 5-2 vote.
The House had passed the stricter version, but Rep. Frank
Hoffmann, the bill's sponsor, says he'll support the Senate
changes.
Meanwhile, the Senate committee also backed a House-passed bill
that would give Louisiana's health secretary broader discretion to
deny or revoke the license of an abortion clinic when there are
safety concerns.
