Hammond Plant Adds 2nd Shift for Sand Wall Baskets

HAMMOND, La. (AP) - As the National Guard has put up more and
more sand walls to protect Gulf Coast beaches from the nation's
worst oil spill, a plant in Hammond has added a second shift to
make the wire mesh baskets used as the foundation.
Dennis Barkemeyer, a tech representative at HESCO Bastion USA,
said it's the first time the collapsible containers
have been used for an oil spill.
The company, based in England, first made what it calls
"Concertainers" to fight shoreline erosion.
The military uses a version in Iran and Afghanistan. But the
The Hammond plant makes baskets for
civilian use, such as floods and erosion control. They're 4 feet
high and 3 by 3 feet across, and lined with fabric.
