ARLINGTON, Texas - Lexie Elkins drove in five runs and Gabby Felps had five hits as the No. 16 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns swept the UT Arlington Mavericks in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader, winning 7-0 and 13-0 on Saturday at Allan Saxe Field.
Louisiana improved to 37-7-1 overall and 15-1 in Sun Belt games, winning 29 of their last 31 games.
Christina Hamilton tossed game one for the Cajuns, allowing six baserunners on two hits, two walks and two hit batters, while fanning two to improve to 20-1 on the season and lower her season ERA to 1.31.
The offense gave Hamilton a 2-0 lead before she even stepped in the circle with a 2-run double by Shellie Landry in the first inning, scoring Haley Hayden and Samantha Walsh.
They added to the lead with four more runs in the second with an RBI double from Corin Voinché, an RBI infield single from Natalie Fernandez and an error off the bat of Elkins, driving in one run and bringing another home to open the Cajuns lead to 6-0.
Christina Hamilton ran into her only trouble of the day in the third inning, when UTA put two runners on base with back-to-back singles to lead of the inning. They eventually got runners on first and third base after a fielders choice. Hamilton got a strikeout with a runner on third and hit a batter to load the bases, but ended the inning with a pop up to keep the shutout intact.
Elkins would add to the Cajuns lead in the fourth, battling the strong winds for her 15th home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line, making it 7-0.
Game two had a slower start to it, with the Cajuns going scoreless in the first two innings before sending ten batters to the plate in the third inning and scoring five runs, and sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring seven, and added one more run in the top of the fifth to win 13-0.
The third inning was highlighted by a bases-loaded three-run double by Elkins, her third, fourth and fifth RBI of the game to open the scoring, and Landry and Felps each picked up an RBI of their own in the inning.
The Cajuns bats didn't slow down in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs on six hits including doubles by Hayden and Redfearn, the second of the two driving in a pair of runs. Hayden would also help the Cajuns score the final two runs of the inning on a single to left and a misplayed ball to bring two runs across. Walsh and Kelsey Vincent also picked up RBI in that inning.
Linzey Cifreo added to the Cajuns' lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single, driving in her fourth run of the season to make it 13-0.
Victoria Brown got the complete game shutout for the Cajuns, striking out a season-high five batters, and allowing two hits. She had a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth, but lost it to a pair of hits in the inning, getting out of the game with the shutout, her first of the season, to improve to 4-1.
The Cajuns and Mavericks will finish up the doubleheader tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch back at Allan Saxe Field. It is the Cajuns final road game on the schedule, before returning home for senior weekend, taking on ULM for a three-game series at ULM. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader will be at 2 p.m. with the regular season finale at noon on Sunday. The Cajuns will then stay at home for the foreseen future, as they host the Sun Belt Conference Championships from May 7-10.
